Project Purpose

The purpose of the project is to improve safety along the Montgomery Road corridor and continue fulfilling the City’s commitment to bicycle users and pedestrians as described in the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. Upon completion of these projects, the City’s Montgomery Road Bikeway will be completed. The path will allow for safer non-motorized travel and will be ADA-compliant along its length and at all intersections.

Engineering Studies

The City of Aurora has attained federal funding (both Local Rail-Highway Crossing Safety Program Funds and Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program [ITEP] Funds) to construct a Multi-Use Path along Montgomery Road. To qualify for federal funding, the City has prepared studies in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and in accordance with Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Bureau of Local Roads & Streets (BLRS) policies and procedures.

Proposed Improvements

The project will consist of installing a new 8’-wide asphalt path along Montgomery Rd including ADA accessible crossings at all intersections. Engineering work is being completed and funded under 2 separate projects:

  1. The mainline path project involves all work with the exception of the CN railroad crossing near Normantown Road and is being funded with ITEP funds.
  2. The CN railroad crossing project involves the work to provide a safe crossing of the CN railroad tracks including pedestrian gates and flashers and is being funded with Railroad Crossing Safety funds.

Schedule

The project is scheduled to begin construction in 2026, pending funding availability and the acquisition of the right-of-way necessary to construct the improvements.
