Project Purpose

The purpose of the project is to improve safety at the intersections of Sullivan Road at Randall Road and Edgelawn Drive, improve capacity at the intersection of Sullivan Road at Randall Road, address future capacity needs at the intersection of Sullivan Road at Edgelawn Drive, improve operations for trucks, complete gaps in the sidewalk system, and improve deteriorated pavements.

Engineering Study Information

The City has attained some federal Surface Transportation Program (STP) funds to reconstruct Sullivan Road. The construction is not yet fully funded. To qualify for federal funding, the City of Aurora is preparing a study in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and in accordance with Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Bureau of Local Roads & Streets (BLRS) policies and procedures.

Proposed Improvements

The proposed improvement consists of widening and reconstructing Sullivan Road from two-lanes to three-lanes from east of Edgelawn Drive to west of Golden Oaks Parkway. The three-lanes would include one through lane in each direction and a center turn lane. The improvements include channelization and traffic signal modernization at the intersection of Randall Road. Improvements include installation of a traffic signal at the intersection of Edgelawn Drive. Sidewalk connectivity and a new shared use path are also part of the proposed improvements.

Schedule

The project is scheduled to begin construction in 2025 at the earliest, pending funding availability, the acquisition of the right-of-way necessary to construct the improvements, and possible staged construction. Installing a traffic signal at the intersection of Edgelawn Drive is not included in the near-term improvements and the City of Aurora will be monitoring the location to determine when traffic signals will be warranted.
