Alderman Daniel Barreiro was a City Hall staffer for 35 years, beginning in 1986 as an intern, transitioning in 1988 to Administrative Assistant in the Mayor's Office, and retiring in 2021 as Chief Community Services Officer, a position he held for 15 years. Throughout the decades, Barreiro held such other roles as Assistant Director of Personnel, Assistant Finance Director, and Assistant Chief of Staff.

Barreiro was the vice president of the East Aurora Board of Education, first elected in 2003-2007 and then re-elected in 2017. After being appointed to the role in 2024, Barreiro won his first election in 2025, serving an unexpired two-year term.

Barreiro has held many community leadership positions over the years, including on the boards of the Aurora East Educational Foundation, the East Aurora Alumni Association, El Centro Pan Americano, the Community Foundation of the Fox River Valley, the Fox Valley Girl Scouts Council, the Fox Valley Park District, the Fox Valley Symphony, the Fox Valley United Way, the Salvation Army, and Sci Tech.

He currently serves with the Knights of Columbus, the Three Fires Council of the Scouting America, and Project Safe Aurora.

After graduating from East Aurora High School, Barreiro earned his Bachelor of Political Science with an emphasis in local government and a Master's in Public Administration with an emphasis in Urban Management from Northern Illinois University.

Barreiro currently serves as the Vice Chairperson of the Rules, Administration, and Procedures (RAP) Committee and a member of the Finance Committee.


El concejal Daniel Barreiro fue miembro del personal de la Municipalidad de Aurora durante 35 años, comenzando en 1986 como pasante, convirtiéndose en el 1988 en asistente administrativo en la Oficina del Alcalde y retirándose en 2021 como Director de Servicios Comunitarios, cargo que ocupó durante 15 años. Overgrown weeds can reduce property values, attract pests, trigger allergies, and pose fire hazards. Property owners are notified to trim excessive growth; if ignored, the city will perform the cutting at the owner's expense and issue escalating fines ranging from $50 to $500 per occurrence. Reports can be made via Aurora's Customer Service Division or 311.

    Storing unauthorized junk, trash, or inoperable vehicles on private property is deemed a nuisance and considered a misdemeanor if not resolved. Owners receive a notice with at least 2 days to abate; inoperable vehicles get 5 days. Continued violations may lead to city removal, lien placement for associated costs, and escalating penalties. Repeat offenders are fined $50 to $500 annually. Reports can be made via Aurora's Customer Service Division or 311.

    The City of Aurora’s Special Census Initiative has returned, as the City pursues a count of its population held outside of the normal census. During the 2020 Census, it was reported that the City of Aurora lost approximately 17,000 people. The reported loss in population has led to the City losing over $4.3 million per year in revenue.

    The City will be conducting a new construction count, which counts specific areas throughout Aurora that have recently been built and are now occupied! Through this new count, the City expects to increase its population total, and help fund key day-to-day operations and services provided to residents.

    Currently, the U.S. Census Bureau is hiring Field Supervisors and Field Representatives to assist in completing the Aurora Special Census, with pay ranging from $21-$24.50, plus excellent benefits!

    myAurora 311 allows residents to access a new online customer support center, a new mobile application, available for download in the App Store and Google Play, an upgraded phone service, and an enhanced in-person customer service location, set to open in late 2025.

    With new calls and cases expected, the City's current in-person customer service call center, located at 3770 McCoy Drive, will also expand its hours, now being open from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M., Monday through Friday!

    The system allows customers to submit cases, such as street maintenance and repair requests, garbage or debris issues, unsafe structures, and more through the mobile app, online, or by dialing “3-1-1" when residing within City limits.

    Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs recently presented awards to eight community leaders from throughout Illinois recognized as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.

    Aurora Alderman Daniel Barreiro, recently appointed Ward 1 alderman, received the office’s leadership award. He was an Aurora City Hall staffer for 35 years, beginning as an intern, transitioning to administrative assistant in the mayor’s office, and retiring in 2021 as Chief Community Services Officer, a position he held for 15 years, under five mayors.

    Barreiro said such awards are important because they can inspire the next generation.
